Wanna be depressed?
Go to Google Images.
Type "Ratzinger".
Then go say a prayer.
When I did this earlier today, 13 of the first 20 images were either grossly evil or not flattering.
And my prayer seemed minuscule compared to the sea of atheism the world now knows.

So sad indeed. Christ promised persecution to his followers, but how hard it is to bear it!
I find comfort in Christ's words before his passion: "Amen, amen, I say to you, you will weep and mourn, while the world rejoices; you will grieve, but your grief will become joy. When a woman is in labor, she is in anguish because her hour has arrived; but when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the pain because of her joy that a child has been born into the world. So you also are now in anguish. But I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you" (Jn 16.20-22).
"I will see you again." Amidst the evils and darkness of this world, God still promises us perfect sight and perfect light. It might be a little while, but His promise is firm.
I think this promise is the rock on which the Holy Cross anchor is latched upon. I always thought it was peculiar symbol (no offense!), but it makes so much sense in times like these.
I do my best to avoid seeing such things because they drive me absolutely mad with rage . . . but then I think of our dear Holy Father - he certainly must know that many people think this way about him and his beloved Lord. Pope Benedict must see the protesters that always appear during his foreign trips . . . and yet look at his face: He is always serene, joyful, almost childlike in his amazement that hundreds of thousands more people are there to see him, hear him, pray with and for him. That gives me some perspective by giving me, I believe, a glimpse of how things will one day be when we are all at home at last!
