I think we can all agree this was a politically motivated decision. Normally, this would be acceptable in any sport that is PROfessional.
However, this is a COLLEGE sport. Those guys went to that school and (most likely) dreamed to go and appear in a bowl game.... politics aside....
Instead of going to a legendary game and displaying their talents in hopes of being drafted by a professional organization.
The image of "Notre Dame Football" should not overshadow the players desire/opportunity to display their talents in hopes of bettering themselves or furthering their career.
I'm not sure what you mean by the decision being "politically motivated" and I doubt that any possible bowl invites would be to "legendary" games.
The student-athletes will receive a well-respected degree and those students who choose to and actually do remain can be motivated to play better next season.
