50 years ago today Rev. Michael A. Mathis, CSC died at the age of 74. A Holy Cross religious of the Indiana Province, Fr. Mathis ministered in a variety of capacities and is noted as the founder of the liturgical studies program at Notre Dame.It was he who, with the financial and administrative backing of then president of the university, Fr. Cavanaugh, was able to invite European and American scholars of theology and liturgy to campus during the summer months and sometimes for year long appointments to the theology department. The names include Joseph Jungmann, Louis Bouyer, Jean Danielou, Balthasar Fischer, and Godfrey Diekmann.
